Before LNG Terminal 3 breaks ground, the shore it will stand on has been retreating for 35 years. This is the story of a coast asked to absorb one more blow.

Part One
The Gulf of Thailand coast at Map Ta Phut was once a living sediment system — a delta-adjacent shoreline fed by river runoff, shaped by monsoon winds, and anchored by mangrove forests. For six thousand years, the inner Gulf coastline accreted naturally.
Thailand's 2,637 km coastline was dynamically stable: not static, but self-correcting. The mangroves were the buffer — a living seawall needing no concrete, no budget, no maintenance contract. Then came industrialization. The coast began to lose its memory.
"Mangroves function as natural barriers against waves and wind, acting as a protective shield against coastal erosion. They mitigate the impact of storms and can self-repair when damaged.""

The erosion at Map Ta Phut did not happen by accident. It was built — permit by permit, reclamation by reclamation, dredge cycle by dredge cycle.
Part Threeตอนที่สาม
Landsat imagery doesn't lie. Between 1988 and 2000, researchers at Chulalongkorn University traced every meter of change at Map Ta Phut using multi-temporal satellite analysis. The numbers are precise. The story is damning.

The mechanism is textbook coastal engineering. The port acts as a dam in the littoral drift. Sand is intercepted — piling up upstream (western accretion) while the downstream coast starves (eastern erosion). It is the predictable consequence of hard structures in a sediment-transport system.
"Sand is accreted on the upstream side of the structure; at the same time, the downstream side is eroded. The residents are now preparing a court case, because they believe the erosion was totally manmade.""

In April 2025, Gulf Energy Development and PTT announced they were moving forward with Thailand's third LNG import terminal — to be built at the very same Map Ta Phut waterfront where decades of satellite data document active, accelerating coastal erosion.
The PPP contract was signed with the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand. What was not cleared — at least not in any public documentation — was a cumulative coastal impact assessment.
Part Five
The likely defense of MTP3's coastal impact is temporal: erosion at Map Ta Phut was already severe before the terminal was proposed. The port caused it. Therefore the terminal is not the culprit. This argument is scientifically incomplete — and Thailand's own policy framework says so.
Coastal sediment systems do not reset between construction events. When the port blocked littoral drift, it created a stressed system where natural buffering capacity has been reduced. Any subsequent hard structure does not encounter a neutral baseline — it encounters a coast already at the edge of its adaptive capacity.
"These plans and projects are not well-integrated, and some projects see immediate problems at the specific site, and do not see the adjacent area which is actually undividable in terms of sand movement along the coast.""
2553MTP3 adds a second interruption point upstream of the existing port. Sand that currently flows around the port will encounter a new obstacle. The downstream erosion consequences are calculable. They simply have not been calculated publicly.MTP3 เพิ่มจุดสกัดกั้นที่สองทางต้นน้ำของท่าเรือ ทรายที่ยังไหลรอบท่าเรือจะพบอุปสรรคใหม่ ผลการกัดเซาะทางปลายน้ำคำนวณได้ เพียงแต่ยังไม่ได้คำนวณต่อสาธารณะ
A terminal built to 2025 standards on a 2025 shoreline that is already retreating will face a different coast by 2045, 2060, and the end of its operating life. Thai policy documents note that existing structures were not designed for future sea level rise. MTP3 carries the same blind spot.
Part Six
Thailand's integrated coastal management framework identifies exactly what is required before hard structures are added to active erosion zones. These questions should be on the record before the first pile is driven in Q4 2025.
Part Seven
Version A — With answers
MTP3 begins operations with a cumulative impact assessment on the record. Coastal monitoring stations are active. Downstream communities have legal protection. Dredged sediment is returned to the littoral system. The terminal knows the coast it stands on.MTP3 เริ่มดำเนินงานพร้อมการประเมินผลกระทบสะสมที่บันทึกไว้ สถานีติดตามชายฝั่งทำงาน ชุมชนปลายน้ำมีการคุ้มครองทางกฎหมาย ตะกอนที่ขุดลอกถูกนำกลับสู่ระบบพัดพาตะกอน โครงการรู้จักชายฝั่งที่ตัวเองยืนอยู่
Version B — Without answers
MTP3 begins operations. A year later, downstream residents notice fishing grounds have moved. A beach narrows. A temple approaches the waterline. The unanswered questions become a court case — just like after Phase 2.MTP3 เริ่มดำเนินงาน หนึ่งปีต่อมา ชาวบ้านปลายน้ำสังเกตว่าแหล่งประมงเคลื่อนที่ หาดแคบลง วัดใกล้ขอบน้ำ คำถามที่ไม่ได้รับคำตอบกลายเป็นคดีความ — เหมือนหลังระยะที่ 2
The coast at Map Ta Phut has been making Version B happen since 1989. It does not require the LNG terminal to be the villain. It only requires that the people approving it ask the questions that a coast already drowning deserves to have answered.
US$1.83 billion is enough to build a terminal. It is also — far more than enough — to commission the coastal science that would tell us what that terminal will cost the shore.1.83 พันล้านดอลลาร์เพียงพอสำหรับสร้างโครงการ และยังเพียงพออย่างยิ่ง — สำหรับว่าจ้างวิทยาศาสตร์ชายฝั่งที่จะบอกว่าโครงการนี้จะมีต้นทุนอะไรต่อชายฝั่ง

Construction begins this quarter. The time to demand cumulative impact assessments, downstream erosion modeling, and enforceable monitoring is now — before the first pile drives into a shore that has been retreating since 1994.
